SPUC Spotlight: KidMed

Pediatric Urgent Care, Richmond, Virginia

By:  Mark Flanzenbaum, M.D., FAAP

KidMed logoAfter more than 13 years of working in a pediatric emergency department, the three physician owners of KidMed embarked on a mission to find a better way to care for sick and injured children. At the time, pediatric urgent care was a fairly new concept around the country. We mapped out a plan for an innovative after-hours pediatric urgent care practice in Richmond, VA and, in 2009, KidMed was born.

KidMed entranceThrough the hard work of a talented and dedicated staff of physicians, nurse practitioners, registered nurses, patient care techs, x-ray technologists, lab techs, front office and administrative staff, KidMed has grown to four locations. There are three locations in the Richmond, VA area (West End, Southside, and Mechanicsville) and a fourth location in Stafford, VA.

Our ongoing goal is simple. We aim to continue to offer our patients and their parents excellent care delivered by our pediatric trained staff with compassion, convenience and low cost. There are many hospitals and emergency departments in the greater Richmond area, including four with dedicated pediatric EDs. There are also numerous general urgent care centers scattered throughout the region. Despite this, we have been able to succeed by providing consistently great care with dedicated pediatric staff and providing that care at a significant cost savings to patients.

Each of our locations has 12-15 large exam rooms (including two critical care rooms with monitors and one with code equipment), digital x-ray and onsite lab. Each exam room has direct air and oxygen regulators. We perform Cell Dyn CBC, Piccolo BMP and CMP, and all the usual point of care testing. Additionally, we have just started performing molecular strep testing at each facility to replace send out throat cultures.

KidMed is open from 12:00 noon to 10:00 pm weekdays and 10:00 am to 9:00 pm weekends at each of the three Richmond locations. We are open 2:00 pm to 10:00 pm weekdays and 11:00 am to 9:00 pm weekends at our Stafford location. Each shift is staffed by a board certified pediatrician and two nurse practitioners, all with pediatric acute care or emergency care experience.

We are currently on track to care for approximately 64,000 patients (between all four locations) in 2016 and more than 250,000 patients since opening the first KidMed in 2009. We have plans for future growth and are always looking for talented staff to join our ever growing team. We have a new improved website launching in the very near future.
