SPUC 3rd Annual Conference • October 6-8, 2017 • Seattle, Washington
The SPUC 2nd Annual Conference was a Success!
The Second Annual Society for Pediatric Urgent Care Conference was held in Atlanta this September. We had a nearly 50% increase in attendees from the inaugural conference. Physicians, nurse practitioners, physician assistants, public health workers, dentists, and administrators were in attendance for lectures and discussion about pediatric urgent care.
With rapid growth in numbers of patients seeking urgent care as well as the number of urgent care centers available in the US (estimates ranging from 7,100 to 20,000), there was much interest surrounding the operations and business of urgent care. Because most urgent care centers nationwide focus on care of adults, attendees were genuinely concerned about assuring that quality pediatric care is delivered at all urgent care centers as well as ones specially designed for children. For this reason, SPUC members discussed the importance of setting standards for pediatric urgent care.
Clinical presentations at the meeting covered best practices, radiology, sports medicine, allergic reactions, dental emergencies, and pain management. Administrative topics included considerations when launching a new urgent care center as well as ways to deal with burgeoning patient load such as online queuing software, medical scribes, and other aids to facilitating flow in a busy pediatric urgent care. In addition, there were thirteen poster presentations on timely pediatric urgent care topics including Zika preparedness, asthma scoring, a focused respiratory clinic for the busy viral season, and an update on the developing OUCH (Organization for Urgent Care Health) database.
